With all the recent press lately about the HTML5 video vs Flash wars, Adobe has come up with a nice new solution. Introducing the HTML5 Video Player from Adobe. Rejoice fellow web designers and clients alike!
The HTML 5 Video Player uses a subset of technology developed by Kaltura that provides a widget which uses the nice smooth playback of HTML 5 (where possible), and then flawlessly degrades into Flash technology for browsers that don’t yet support the HTML 5 standard.
I believe this will create a new wave of HTML5 video use as previous to this technology, HTML5 video was not widely considered production friendly. It will also save web designers and developers a heap of time and trouble (and clients money) as we will no longer have to export video into various formats which present depending on the device, platform, and/or browser!
So what’s the big deal about HTML5 video? There’s been a lot of talk about Flash video not being viewable on any iPhone and iPads (which is not going to change anytime soon if you listen to Steve Jobs’ harsh words). This solves that problem. HTML5 video is also faster, more efficient, and it makes video an open standard, basically we no longer have to rely on Adobe! And an open standard means more innovation. I can’t wait!
